We have a tough time finding a good Hong Kong style restaurant that we like. Picky P has found one that she thinks is interesting, Lido Restaurant. I am not really picky on food choices so we decided to give it a try on our next trip to Richmond. First off parking to this place is a nightmare. We got there around 2:30 PM and the lot was totally full. The best bet is for you to park at the nearby Alberdeen Centre and just walk across to the plaza. We would usually pop by Daiso afterwards so we are still customers. It is a mid-sized place and can easily be crowded. We still had to wait for 15 minutes at this time. We were given multiple menus which easily can confuse people. You will easily get overwhelmed. Just look at all the specials around you when seated. The popular dish here is their pineapple buns which are constantly being made. When we got there, the last batch was just finished. So I ordered something which I hope would go good with it. From the Chinese & Western Style Mini Set, I got the ham & eggs, beef brisket & tendon, and Japanese style chicken. I think I made a mistake with the chicken because it was full of Teriyaki sause which I don’t particularly care for. Picky P got the satay beef, turnip cake and fries. The turnip cake was good. I didn’t like the satay beef much (too soft), but she enjoyed it. For the kids, we ordered fried wonton and pig’s blood. Big A enjoyed the big blood, chocolate as he says. We all enjoyed the wonton.
The utensils delivered to us for self service but were wet. Our table quickly filled up with plates. The restrooms were acceptable for an Asian restaurant. My lemon ice tea wasn’t anything special. Overall, Picky P liked it. For me, I am so-so probably due to higher expectations from the “hype” of the buns which I think are average. The crowded atmosphere of the place didn’t help. The kids liked the food and we had plenty to pack home afterwards. Will I go back? Maybe… if I can find parking and go there at 3:30PM.

Our family recently went to The Keg Steakhouse and Bar at the station in New Westminster. You might wonder why a blog called Cheapass in Vancouver starts off with a place like The Keg. Well, I had to buy a gift card for a fundraiser for my son plus it was our wedding anniversary and we needed a place where kids can go. So it is a “nice” affordable anniversary dinner. I tried their Winter Grill menu and had a Kansas City Strip – NY striploin (18 oz) with a side of mashed potato and a glass of Robert Mondavi “Woodbridge” Cabernet Sauvignon – Keg Size. Hey, it’s a celebration. Picky P decided on trying out their $28 Dine-out menu which includes baked goat cheese, 10 oz Prime-Rib steak with a baked potato side, and Billy Miner Pie for dessert. Now The Keg is pretty kids friendly and gives kids menu for children to draw on with crayons. For Big A, we ordered the BBQ Grilled Chicken with a Caesar salad. He likes salad. Little B was given the Keg Mini Burgers with fries. He likes fries. Both of them enjoyed lemonade which The Keg serve in little kid sized cup. All kid’s meals come with a veggie platter and ice cream. The service was great and everyone enjoyed their meal. We like to share our meal with each other. The baked goat cheese was warm with crushed almonds giving it an interesting blend of soft and crunchy. It goes great with the bread and tomato basil salsa. I considered my Kansas City NY steak nicely done with good texture and flavor. The prime rib was soft and wonderful with horseradish and the dip. I believe they have a bit of trouble with the Big A’s order. The Caesar salad appeared full size however the grilled BBQ chicken looking sad in a big plate with the BBQ sauce. Little B enjoyed his fries and that’s about it. The mini burgers were not dressed and plain. He likes it this way but I am not sure others would. We all enjoyed the Billy Miner Pie. I am not sure how we would have been able to finish it if we ordered two Dine-out orders.
The overall environment is like an old steakhouse with all the stuff that goes with that. There are two floors to this restaurant with the 2nd floor having the restrooms which are old and average cleanliness. We didn’t observe any infant changing facilities. There is some parking to the rear and a little to the front but I can imagine it being hard to fine if the place was crowded. We went on a Sunday evening so it wasn’t too bad. Will we go again? We like The Keg as an establishment but Picky P didn’t like the condition of this particular restaurant. Me, I enjoyed it overall but would worry about parking here if it gets crowded. The kids, they enjoyed it, but they enjoy most things… |
